Please allow me to introduce myself…

Now that I’ve been here at Blackstone for a few weeks now, it’s probably about time I posted something to this blog. They haven’t added my name to the list at the top there yet though, hmm… Anyway, here it is, my first post. Enjoy!

A little bit about myself:

I’m married, in my early-30s, a military brat, and have a 4 1/2 year old boy and a 3 year old girl. My wife and I are expecting our second boy in January 2009. My wife is British, and we’ve just returned from living in the United Kingdom for the last 5 years. We’ve been living in Louisville since June. I started at Blackstone at the beginning of October.

Louisville is a great city; It’s not too big, not too small, and there’s a LOT to do around here. My family just went to the Louisville Zoo’s big Halloween party; It is my kids’ first “real” Halloween (the holiday just isn’t that big in the UK…), and they absolutely loved it! Louisville’s also got a ton of cool little hole-in-the-wall clubs, cafés, shops, and all kinds of bigger, touristy places to visit here. With all the museums, parks, theaters, and other places we’ve yet to discover, it looks like there’s here plenty to keep us busy.

Now that my voluntary community service for the Louisville Metro Board of Tourism is over…

Have you heard of Big Huge Labs?

Nearly 50 awesome web-based tools for designers, writers, and flickr lovers. I can’t say enough good things about this site.

Some of my favorite fun tools are the Hockneyizer and Lolcats, but there are some really useful tools to get serious work done too. For example, the Palette Generator and Writer are both indispensable.

If you haven’t visited the site, you really ought to check them out.

And, just for fun, here’s a map I just made using Map Maker.

That’s awesome. I’ve always wanted to go to England, but I am terrified of planes. (Not exactly the planes themselves, just the fact that they crash…) I’m also glad you like Louisville. I’m not too fond of it, but then again I’ve lived here my whole life (18 years) and I just recently got a car and license to go places around here.

Thats awesome you’ve covered so much of Europe! I want to visit India. The country looks intriguing.

@Ashley – The only problem with planes is that when one crashes, there’s usually quite a lot of people that are involved. It hardly makes the news if a single family car packs it in on the highway… There’s a lot of research that supports the idea that it’s much, much safer to fly than to drive. Of course, reading that research might put you off driving, too! Regardless, if you ever get a chance to visit, you definitely should go. Just keep in mind that a lot of the famous places and things you might know only from TV or the movies are actually a lot smaller and less glamorous in real life. Stonehenge is TINY, and surrounded on several sides by high-traffic motorways.

@Daniel – India was amazing. I only visited New Delhi, so I didn’t get to visit the Taj Mahal — although I did visit Humayun’s Tomb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humayun%E2%80%99s_Tomb), which is about 100 years older than the Taj Mahal. I was told it was the building that the Taj Mahal was actually based on. The 2 biggest things that I found hard to deal with in India were the extreme heat (it was 104 F on the day I went to Humayun’s Tomb — and that was the coolest day of the week I was there!), and the extremes of poverty and wealth. Parts of New Delhi look like Beverly Hills, and other parts look like they’ve just been bombarded with mortars…
